Reverse mortgages are increasing in popularity with seniors who have equity in their homes and want to remain in their homes or supplement their income. The ONLY reverse mortgage insured by the U.S. Federal Government is called a Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (HECM), and only available through a Federal Housing Administration (FHA)-approved lender. The HECM a reverse mortgage program that enables you to withdraw a portion of your home's equity to use for home maintenance, repairs, or general living expenses. HECM borrowers may reside in their homes indefinitely as long as taxes and insurance are kept current.

HECM Counselors
If you are ready to take the next step, the lender MUST have you meet with a HUD housing counselor. There is an increasing number of older clients considering a reverse mortgage as a way to stay in their homes and remain financially independent.
The counseling sessions are a condition for securing a HECM through HUD. The FTC is the consumer protection agency that regulates HECM reverse mortgage offers, and reports any false information or claims.
